Speaking True: The Flywheel
/This month's topic is acceleration. I know, how geeky is that? All right, so let me do a call back to last month. Last month we talked about blossoming, about how we bear much fruit in our lives and through our lives.
Acceleration relates to the idea of momentum. If you have studied Good To Great, the leadership framework, they talk about the flywheel.
The flywheel is a mechanical device where you turn it once and it's really hard, but then the second time it's easier, the third time it's easier, still easier on the fourth time, and eventually you get some momentum going. Well, our lives, our blossoming, our acceleration is exactly like that.
And I know you know this, like when you went to the gym for the first time, it was really hard. And then the second time was a little easier, maybe, or you may have been sore, still hard. But at some moment in time, you begin to get this momentum that carries you through. It's true in all places in our lives.
The point I want to make about this is it's true about our psycho-spiritual development as well. There's this effort that is required to get started with our growth and development. And at first, it can be very, very challenging, difficult, perhaps unpleasant.
But with each successive effort, this is true whether we're journaling, whether we're practicing contemplation, meditation, all those things that we know develop our insides, that slowly but surely we gain momentum.
Some years ago, I was talking to an older female friend, Jeannie Rigaud, and she's now passed from the earth. I asked Jeannie about the manifestations in her life. She basically said it was the golden years, and that she was having the golden years because of iteration after iteration after iteration of this internal growth and development work. And the result was she just blossomed more and more and more, hence the golden years.
Perhaps one of the great pieces of mischief in our culture is this idea that you can take five easy steps and everything will be transformed tomorrow. On some level, we know that's not true. But it is useful to know that acceleration, momentum, is our friend. And it starts with one challenging first step, followed by steps that get easier and easier over time.
So what's your first step today?
